The mission of CUP is to raise awareness about the plight of the poor in Greater Cincinnati. Our goals:
Summarized 2020 Financial Data
CUP Agency ReportsYour kind support during 2020 made this possible: Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1983, Bethany House Services (BHS) is the regions largest shelter and housing provider for homeless families. We provide emergency shelter, food, clothing, help finding housing and jobs and life skills education for both parents and children. Families continue to receive services after they leave the emergency shelter and/or housing programs. We also collaborate with community providers of medical and mental health services, job readiness and workforce development programs and over 50 organizations to meet the complex needs of the families we serve. Our wrap-around services address both a familys urgent needs and prevent repeat episodes of homelessness. Children are the unseen faces of homelessness in our community. Serving 60% of the families experiencing homelessness and 66% of the children in our community, Bethany House has a life-changing impact on thousands of homeless parents and children every year. In 2020 we served 2,321 individuals - 1,552 of these individuals were children. Mary Magdalen House (MMH) is an oasis of hospitality where our guests can shower, have laundry done, have the use of a telephone, and receive mail and messages. For most of our guests, coming to Mary Magdalen House is the highlight of their day. It is a place where they can feel refreshed and renewed, a place where they receive a smile and be assured that they are valued, a place where they can experience a short reprieve from the hardships of living on the street. The guests of Mary Magdalen House can leave here unashamed of their appearance, with a renewed sense of dignity. 2020 was a challenging and very different year for all of us, and MMH is no exception. While we closed for a few weeks to rethink how to keep our guests and employees safe and to install extra safety measures, we quickly realized how very necessary our services are. Familiar and new faces appeared daily to request hygiene supplies, fresh clothing, extra socks, and much more. Although there were fewer guests who visited us and we provided fewer showers due to the pandemic, we still welcomed 1,472 guests last year. We provided 17,381 showers, laundered 16,633 sets of clothing, provided 2,411 pairs of pants, 2,668 pairs of underwear, and 2,783 pairs of socks.
Our Daily Bread (ODB) envisions a Greater Cincinnati in which every person has sufficient access to food, essential social services and a place to feel safe. Since 1985, we have worked toward this vision by providing hot, home-cooked meals to our neighbors in Over the Rhine. ODB has been providing to-go meals since COVID-19 began and served 164,177 meals in 2020 with help from hundreds of volunteers, both on-site and cooking from home. 100% of the food we serve is donated. Queen City Kitchen (formerly Over-the-Rhine and Walnut Hills Kitchens and Pantry) is Cincinnati's oldest soup kitchen and, after 40+ years, remains true to its mission of providing food with dignity for neighbors in need. Powered by a network of compassionate volunteers, we are nourishing new perceptions of food insecurity, stripping away all stigmas, and feeding a force for good that can transform entire communities one meal at a time. We operate two kitchens, one in Over-the-Rhine and another in Walnut Hills, and between our two kitchens we served 2,200 meals per week during the pandemic. Our food pantry, located in Walnut Hills, is open on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays serving groceries to approximately 500 families per week during the pandemic. Our neighbors experience food insecurity for many reasons: limited education and lack of employable skills, barriers due to mental or physical health, or unstable housing. No matter how or why they come through our doors, we seek to provide a moment of warmth, cheer, and stability while meeting one of life's most basic needs. In 2020, our food pantry served over 10,000 families and over 91,536 hot meals were served from our kitchens. St. Vincent de Paul - Cincinnati brings hope to the frontlines of poverty with more than 1,100 parish volunteers visiting the homes of neighbors in need to provide emergency assistance. The organization has been serving residents of the Cincinnati community for more than 150 years through our parish-based Conferences or through our outreach centers in the West End and Winton Hills. When the poor and vulnerable of our community have no other place to turn, we are there for them, regardless of race or creed. In 2020, the St. Vincent de Paul Cincinnati District Council helped our neighbors through services including food assistance, homelessness prevention, clothing and furniture assistance, and the Charitable Pharmacy. Tender Mercies transforms the lives of homeless adults with mental illness by providing security, dignity, and community in a place they call home. In 2020, Tender Mercies served 213 residents with permanent supportive housing, 99% of residents maintained their permanent housing or exited to permanent housing in the community and 64% of residents maintained or increased their income. Residentslive at Tender Mercies 5 years, on average. In early 2020, Tender Mercies opened The 821 Flats—a project which provides an additional 57 homes to individuals who have experienced homelessness. 2020 CUP Board Roster
